Leg markings are the white areas on a pony’s legs. They are important for identification and registration with breed societies.

Learn More About the Parts of the Horse

Heel:

White marking that appears on one or both bulbs of a horse’s heel.

Ermine Spots:

Small dark spots that appear on any white marking near the hoof.

Coronet:

Thin white marking that runs near to the top of the hoof along the coronet band.

Half Pastern:

A white leg marking that covers half of the pastern.

Pastern:

A white leg marking that covers the pastern and does not go above the fetlock joint.

Sock:

A white leg marking that covers all of the pastern and over the fetlock joint.

Half-Cannon:

A white leg marking that extends up half of the cannon bone. Also called a half stocking.

Stocking:

A white leg marking that extends all the way up the cannon bone.

Leg Markings are described by how far up the leg the white hair goes.

Coronet

A brand made by freezing instead of burning, usually on the neck. Numbers and letters are usually used, and the hair grows back in white.
